Welcome to Global Research Network on Parliaments and People

We are interested in opening up the study of political representation, engagement and participation to collaborations across disciplinary boundaries – including the arts, social sciences and humanities, and creative and cultural industries. Our aim is to generate, support, and share insights into the relationships between parliaments, politicians and people in ways that deepen democratic dialogue and foster more inclusive forms of democracy

In August 2022, Emma Crewe (SOAS) and Andrea Cornw

In August 2022, Emma Crewe (SOAS) and Andrea Cornwall (King´s College) joined the Brazilian researchers @crisbrumbernardes and @te_hoyler in São Paulo for one week. The purpose of their week together was to do political ethnography and use it to reflect on the methodological approach that the project was taking.
Emma Crewe came up with the idea of collective fieldnotes: each researcher adopted a colour for their entries on a shared document, and over the days that followed, they wrote up 12,000 words containing the main lines of insights from the interviews and encounters. The individual prose was then interwoven with comments, questions, thoughts, echoes and reminders of the others.
From this experience, two soon-to-be-published papers emerged. While recognising questions of negotiation, meaning-making and the relational dynamics of a collective inquiry, both pieces also dissect how the process of collective ethnography was actually done. Stand by for news !

Speaking of visual outputs we share today the Exhibition “The Rule and The Exception”, held in São Paulo at the independent art center @atelie397 from 15 April to 13 May 2023. Starting from EOPP´s inquiry into how politicians connect with people, the invited curator @ericaburini had the freedom to invert the question and ask how this relationship is perceived by citizens. In particular, she was interested in how current artists react to norms, laws, ordinances, impositions, precepts, prescriptions, guidelines, and determinations, among other rules, emphasising those formally written by governments and parliaments. The EOPP researcher @te_hoyler played a role as a producer and artist in the exhibition.

The artist ethnographer Nicholas Sarra joined Emma

The artist ethnographer Nicholas Sarra joined Emma Crewe in Texas towards the end of the session in May 2023 and produced artwork related art pieces.

“In the paintings I thought I might try and construct a feeling of archaeology in that they would also be composed of layers of stuff. There may be layers that are invisible but nonetheless are influential on our habitus, on how we might perceive things.”

In January 2023 Emma Crewe, an anthropologist from London (SOAS) and Coordinator of the EOPP Project, visited the Texas State Legislature in Austin to research its 88th Session. In the pictures, we see parliamentary rituals, politics being made in the session´s recess, protests, and the researcher during an interview.

Based on fieldwork in the Indian state of Himachal

Based on fieldwork in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, Vidya Venkat argues that poll statistics do not fully capture the complexity of women’s participation in electoral contests.
In November 2022, voters in the India state of Himachal Pradesh went to the polls to select the 68 members of the state’s legislative assembly. Ahead of the elections, news channels and the Internet were abuzz with analysis of election numbers. One such analysis carried out by the Association of Democratic Reforms noted that of the 412 candidates contesting in the elections fielded by various political parties, only 24 candidates, accounting for a lowly six percent, comprised of women. The number by itself is quite stark in exposing the poor participation of women in the electoral battle and establishes political leadership as a male bastion.
However, ethnographic field research allowed the GRNPP team on the ground in Himachal to uncover much more than what this statistic could reveal. i) Numbers do not capture the complex sociological dynamics involved in electoral battles on the ground. ii) Not all women in the electoral fray can be treated alike by clubbing them into a single statistic based on their gender identity.
