Parliament-public engagement in Ethiopia: a weak link

This chapter analyses democracy in Ethiopia, and is part of an edited book by Kidane Mengisteab called The Crisis of Democratization in the Greater Horn of Africa: Towards Building Institutional Foundations (2020: 115-144) which examines the structural and institutional obstacles to democratisation in transitional societies, and offers recommendations on how to overcome them. Ayenew’s chapter was part of the Parliamentary Effectiveness programme, researching the relationship between parliaments and civil society in Ethiopia and Bangladesh.
