Literature must reflect a country’s diversity. PEN Myanmar analysed a decade’s worth of stories published in three of Myanmar’s leading magazines, in order to chart changes in character representation and exclusion in the country’s literature, as well as how topics of short stories have been impacted by the nascent turn to democracy in recent years. Their findings and recommendations formed the basis for a film which has been shared across social media and at events across the country. PEN Myanmar’s aim is to advocate for the inclusion of a greater range of characters in Myanmar literature, in order to reflect the country’s rich diversity, with the help of evidence-based research.
